about
A new interpretation to a poem by Lea Goldberg.
The words of Goldberg's ninth Sonnet in "The Love of Teresa Demon" have long since been understood as describing the broken heart of unrequited love. But does the love referred to in the poem have to be romantic? Does our situation in Israel differ so much than that of the lovers in the song?
"Beyond Our Windows" is a duet between two nations, attempting to describe the pain each side feels; living on the same land, gazing through different windows at the same view, eating the same olives, picking the same fruits, and failing to find love in each other. It attempts as well to describe the mutual suffering, frustration, sense of failure, and longing. For lack of any other means of communication, perhaps musically, we can find common ground.
lyrics
Through my window, as through your own
The same garden unfolds the same view,
And for an entire day I am permitted too
To love those things on which your eyes laid upon.
Outside your window just like outside mine
The same nightingale sings, each night,
When in its dream your heart shivers a slight
So will I awaken from it, and pine.
That old pine tree
Where each needle bears your gaze,
Will greet me with a blessing, as does the morning dew.
Together we loved so many things
Yet your hatch bore no rays
All that could touch was our loneliness, your heart I never knew.
